Activity 1 Week One: The First Settlers

On your blog, post three facts that you learned about this interesting man.
What other stories have you heard about Maui?

1. Maui really wants to go fishing with his older Brothers but they always had a excuse so he could not come with them.

2.  Maui's grandmother, Murirangawhenua, said that he would be a great fishermen."Let your lines down as I say my karakia and you'll catch more fish than you ever have."

3.  Maui was raised up by the sea Gods because his real parents didn't want him so the through him into the sea then the sea Gods found him and raised him.

  1. Kia Ora Cameron and welcome to the Summer Learning Journey programme for 2017-2018. It is so great to see that you have joined us this year! We really enjoyed blogging with you in July and can't wait to read all of yours posts this summer.

I can see from your first post that you learned quite a bit about Maui. He was a really interesting man, wasn't he? It sounds like he was an expert fisherman. Have you ever been fishing? I haven't tried it yet but would like to take Aronui (my son) out on a boat one day soon. I think that he'd really enjoy it.

I hope that you and your family are having an enjoyable break from school. The weather has been pretty beautiful. Have you had the chance to play outside quite a bit? Aronui and I have been outside each day, shooting hoops and going to the beach. His favourite sport at the moment is basketball. What is your favourite sport?

Hope to see you online again soon!

    Cheers,
    Rachel :)

  2. Kia ora Cameron,

My name is Emiely (pronounced “Emily”) and I work alongside Rachel at the Summer Learning Journey!

Thanks for sharing these three interesting facts about Maui. Murirangawhenua sounds like a very wise Grandmother! Do you know what a karakia is? Why do you think saying a karakia would help Maui catch more fish?

I hope you have been having an awesome summer holiday! We have had quite a few hot days here in Auckland, haven't we? I hope you have been enjoying the sun and remembering to wear a hat and some sunblock! What things have you been doing these holidays?

It is great to see you have made a start to the Summer Learning Journey! I know the Summer Learning Journey team can't wait to see what else you will blog!

    Noho ora mai,

    Emiely :)
